Emerging from the mountain town of Nelson, British Columbia, Vague Notion continues to carve out a distinct space in contemporary indie electronic music with the release of their new EP, GLOW, a six-track, 22-minute journey through post-punk indietronica, cinematic textures, and emotionally charged storytelling.
Since forming in 2013, the duo has steadily developed a sound that blends atmospheric electronic production with expressive guitar work and unmistakable vocals, resulting in music that feels both intimate and expansive. Drawing from indietronica, synthpop, rock, and jazz influences, Vague Notion crafts compositions that prioritize mood, movement, and emotional evolution, often unfolding in unexpected ways that balance tension and release.
At the core of the project is vocalist Cheryl Janzen, whose delivery has drawn comparisons to Chrissie Hynde—cool, direct, and emotionally grounded. She plays most of the synth tracks, and she also co-produced the songs. Her voice anchors the duo’s layered sonic landscapes, shifting fluidly between restrained introspection and quietly powerful intensity, always maintaining a strong human presence within the electronic atmosphere.
Alongside her is multi-instrumentalist Bevan Early, whose distinctive guitar work brings rhythmic complexity and melodic depth. Influenced by South and West African guitar traditions as well as jazz, Early weaves intricate patterns that interact dynamically with synth-driven arrangements, adding both motion and texture to the duo’s evolving sound.
Together, Janzen and Early create a musical dialogue where organic musicianship and electronic production coexist seamlessly, forming a signature style that is both exploratory and cohesive.
Vague Notion’s music has gained increasing international attention across independent radio platforms. Their track “Base Sick” was professionally adjudicated by Juno Award–winning and Grammy-nominated musician Michael Hanson of Glass Tiger, who offered strong praise for the duo’s songwriting and sonic identity.
The project has also achieved notable chart success:
These milestones reflect the duo’s growing presence across the global indie radio landscape and continued resonance with international audiences.
Their latest EP, GLOW, marks an evolution in the Vague Notion sound, expanding the emotional palette while retaining the atmospheric depth that defines their work. The release introduces brighter melodic energy and a sense of forward motion, moving between introspection and uplift in a way that feels both cinematic and grounded.
Inspired by the landscapes of British Columbia’s Interior and the duo’s physical and spiritual experiences within them, GLOW reflects a creative process rooted in exploration and reinvention. Cheryl Janzen’s lyrics span themes of the human condition, contradiction, fantastical storytelling, and inner journeys, while Bevan Early’s production pushes sonic boundaries with each track.
Working independently from their base in rural British Columbia, Vague Notion continues to refine a sound that is emotionally resonant, genre-defying, and unmistakably their own, music that invites listeners into a space where melody, groove, and human connection converge.
“GLOW, is Vague Notion at their most expansive and emotionally luminous, an EP that moves like shifting light through mountain air. It captures their signature blend of cinematic electronics and raw human expression, while pushing into a brighter, more forward-facing energy that feels both fearless and deeply alive,” shares music publicist Danielle Holian, Decent Music PR.
