A Stirring Folk-Rock Narrative on Aging, Connection, and the Things We Leave Unsaid
Indie folk and alt-country artist SunSkip (the musical project of singer-songwriter Sean Maljanian) returns with “Sincerely,” a heartfelt new single blending warm storytelling with a vibrant, honky-tonk energy. The track is available now on all major streaming platforms.
Rooted in the intimacy of handwritten letters, “Sincerely” follows two characters, John and Sue, as they exchange notes later in life. While their words remain gentle on the surface, the deeper truth emerges between the lines: a shared emotional weight, the complexities of growing older, and the quiet struggles rarely spoken aloud. The result is a song that feels both tender and unflinchingly honest.
“Many of the harsh realities that come with getting older aren’t talked about enough in modern music,” Maljanian says. “A lot of people from John and Sue’s generation grew up at a time when mental health simply wasn’t discussed. They still feel like they ‘shouldn’t complain,’ even when they’re carrying so much underneath. I wanted to give voice to that, to the things we hide even from the people we love.”
Following the release of his EP Smoke and Mirrors, Maljanian sought to break out of the quiet indie-folk mould with something that would get listeners moving. What began as a simple idea quickly exploded into a full-blown folk-rock barn burner.
Working with producer Kory Burrel, the recording sessions took on an electrifying, off-the-rails spirit, one that included bottles, pans, and even a giant cardboard box in place of traditional percussion.
“We went completely berserk in the studio,” Maljanian laughs. “We wanted it to feel like a very alive saloon where the band is going absolutely crazy in the best way.”
The single features:
Vocals & Guitar: Sean Maljanian
Bass, Piano & Backing Vocals: Kory Burrel
Drums: Colum Enrique
Produced & Mixed by: Kory Burrel
Mastered by: Jesse Morvan
This spring, SunSkip will bring “Sincerely” to stages across New York City, including a filmed live performance with the acclaimed video team I Know We Should, known for their work with American Fest, Bluegrass Station, and No Depression. Additional NYC shows will be announced soon.
About SunSkip
Music has been woven into Maljanian’s life since childhood, weekends spent at his grandparents’ home, surrounded by upright basses, mandolins, and well-loved guitars. His earliest music memory, slipping an acorn inside one of those basses, became the accidental seed of a lifelong pursuit. He picked up a guitar at nine, began performing live at twelve, and has carried his early folk influences with him ever since. Years immersed in New York City’s rich, eclectic music scene added a rougher edge to his writing, culminating in SunSkip’s distinct indie folk, alt-country, and folk-rock sound. Fans of John Moreland, Jack Davies, and Jake Xerxes Fussell will find a familiar resonance in his work.
