Irem Bekter Unveils New Single ‘Miscommunication (Lost In Transmission)’

Montreal-based singer-songwriter Irem Bekter releases her latest single, “Miscommunication (Lost In Transmission),” lifted from her album, The Winding Road, which is a playful and rhythmically rich exploration of human connection, language, and the ways words can sometimes miss their mark.

Hailing from Istanbul, Turkey, Bekter brings a global sensibility to her music, blending influences from Turkish folk, jazz, world, and cinematic indie traditions. Drawing on her extensive artistic journey across Turkey, England, Argentina, and now Canada, Bekter weaves English, French, and a Spanish rap by Akawui over a Turkish folk rhythm, culminating in a cheerful exchange where two voices talk entirely past each other.

“Miscommunication (Lost In Transmission)” features arrangements by Jean Massicotte and a lineup of talented collaborators: Akawui (rap), Yves Desrosiers (electric guitar), David Ryshpan (keyboards and backing vocals), Mathieu Deschenaux (electric bass), Olivier Bussières (percussion), Lu Horta (body percussion and backing vocals), and Irem Bekter on drum machine.

Bekter’s music has often been compared to artists such as Lhasa de Sela, Beirut, Barbatuques, and Ibrahim Maalouf, blending evocative storytelling with intricate rhythms and cinematic textures. Her songs traverse cultures and languages, reflecting a life shaped by movement and artistic exploration.

After settling in Montréal in 2007, Bekter established herself in the local music scene, founding the Irem Bekter Quintet, performing at the Montreal International Jazz Festival and other venues, and releasing her albums Primero (2011) and Je suis ici (2019). The accompanying album, This Winding Road (2026), showcases the fully original material that fuses Turkish and Argentinian rhythms with electronic, jazz, and indie influences.

“With ‘Miscommunication (Lost In Transmission),’ Irem captures the beauty and humour in human connection, where words flow freely but meaning can slip through the cracks. It’s playful, rhythmic, and utterly distinctive, showcasing her unique ability to blend cultures, languages, and musical traditions into something wholly original,” - music publicist Danielle Holian, Decent Music PR
