Tolani is an afrobeat artist from Nigeria. His style is a unique blend of afrobeat and hip hop music, laced with chants and smooth melodies that deliver very feel good vibes.
Please tell us about your most recent release!
It’s been a crazy year and I just wanted to release something relaxing to end the year. You know? So I went for this song. It’s a mid-tempo Afrobeat song I made during lockdown with my producer and friend Westside. It’s dedicated to all the girls out there.. you know, especially the ones who love quick but are always looking for the next thrill. Those ones.
What's your local music scene like?
I’m from Nigeria, a country with over 150million people. So you can imagine what the music scene is like. It’s crowded! And very talented. So it takes a lot of work, funds and luck to be able to stand out. It’s also very bubbly and honestly you get the best music from Nigeria. Sweet Afrobeat.
How would you describe your musical style?
I make Afrobeat music. It’s heavily influenced by hip hop culture, because I grew up listening to Eminem, 50 cent. But there’s also the mix of Boney M for example, I was in love with Bobby Farrell growing up. However, Fela! That’s the man. That’s who all of this is based on and if you want to understand my music, you have to go back to him.
Who were your musical influences growing up?
I kind of already answered that but besides those guys, I’ll say Lagbaja, 2Face and MI Abaga.
Is there a certain mood you have to be in to write music?
No, I just tap into any mood I’m in to be honest. Sometimes nothing just comes and it could be because my mind is wandering a bit too much, over thinking. But the right note, right instrumental and everything just flows.
What's the best gig you've ever been to?
JCole! When he came to Nigeria in 2019! Yeah that was sick!
What are your plans moving into 2021?
