Like Nobody Else
The New Single
24th July 2020

Moodbay’s first single ‘Listen Up’ was called a ‘startling debut’ by legendary BBC DJ Janice Long. It won the Amazing Radio listener poll and was a Top Ten hit in the national UK Music Week club chart in summer 2019. Their second Online Records release ‘Alone’ was premiered by North East music magazine NARC Online and championed by Bob Fisher of BBC Music Introducing Tees and Nick Roberts of BBC Music Introducing North East. 'Alone' has received play from Janice Long and BBC's Alex Lester, plus 68 regional stations. On Spotify, Moodbay have had over 101K listeners in 76 countries - all this in under a year.

The electropop duo are beginning to make waves across the North East live music scene. They recently performed at two Metro Radio events - headlining at Saltwell Park Fireworks in Gateshead (with an audience of 25,000) and playing at the Newcastle Christmas Lights 2019 alongside Sam Fender (to an audience of 10,000). SSD Concerts have started to book Moodbay slots for touring artists in Newcastle - including the indie band Plastic Mermaids and electro-pop outfit Deco.

'Like Nobody Else'

Anna Stephens, Moodbay’s singer and resident poet, was inspired to start writing ‘Like Nobody Else’ by seeing the beautiful figure of Venus. Yes, that’s right, a female! What a scandal. You can see the headlines: ‘Lead singer admits to being bi-curious’. Maybe. Except that Anna says what she saw was a beautiful human essence, rather than anything so material as flesh and blood.

Everyone’s seen the Botticelli painting in question… a windswept Venus emerges from the sea, standing in a huge shell. It’s a classic image, reproduced millions of times. From that meme, Anna and her partner Alfie have developed a cracking pop tune, with an unforgettable chorus and driving, 8Os influenced synth lines.

The final result is a dreamlike summer sound that defies definition. Just hints of the initial inspiration remain in some of the lines: ‘Here on the sand’, ‘I could frame you and admire all your imperfections’, ‘I’m at the water’s edge’.

It was a BBC radio producer who picked up on ‘Like Nobody Else’, and felt it had daytime radio potential. After its release on July 3rd, that potential may well be realised and Moodbay will have taken another important step on their journey.

Lyrics

I feel the heat as I dream of you out in the ocean

There you are upon a shell, you're dancing in slow motion

Your hair is fiery like the flames of the underworld

But I know where you belong

And that is up above

Here on the sand

As I wait for your hand

I'm at the water's edge

Waiting for somebody

You're like nobody else

Who's like nobody else

All I can ever see in you is something beautiful

Even when you're trouble, you belong upon the wall

I could frame you and admire all your imperfections

I find a diamond when you're rough around the edge

You're like nobody else

I've got a plan that I don't understand

I'm at the water's edge

Waiting for somebody

You're like nobody else

Who's like nobody else

I'm down on my knees

You're like nobody else

Nobody else

When you're far from me

It cuts me to the bone

And I'm here and I'm waiting I'm lonely

Can you be my only?

You're like nobody else

You're like nobody else

Who's like nobody else

I'm down on my knees

You're like nobody else

Nobody else

About Moodbay

MOODBAY are producer-songwriter Alfie Cattell and vocalist-songwriter Anna Stephens. They are based in the North East, UK. Their unusual shade of electropop incorporates a range of genres from R&B to Classical - the duo describe their sound as ‘moodpop’. They got together in 2017, after meeting in the corridor of BIMM music school in Manchester.

Before Manchester, Anna moved from her home in Darlington to Paris, where she worked at a magazine house. She spent most of her time scribbling down poetry at her office desk and staying out late. While completing her French studies in Oxford, she started to put her words to piano.

Alfie also started out on piano, and it remains his favourite instrument. He is a self-taught musician, who grew up in North Wales, recreating Zelda tunes on a dusty Yamaha keyboard, in between blue WKD’s and listening to Radiohead. He has honed his studio skills in Moodbay and now produces the edgy sounds that drive Anna’s vocals along.
